We built the flavour system,
so you don’t have to.

Our Origin Story

At UmamiBee, We Build Flavour. We Don’t Just Add It.

Most home cooks are juggling a lot. Work, family, and the everyday rush. You still want meals with bold, layered flavour, but you may not have the time to spend roasting, simmering, fermenting, and building that depth from scratch. That is the gap UmamiBee exists to fill.

We do the slow flavour-building work so you don’t have to.

Our sauces and condiments combine traditional fermentation, roasted aromatics, carefully layered ingredients, and food science to create the kind of depth that normally takes time.

One spoon of Dish Lifter can transform a simple fried rice, stir-fry, soup, sauce, or weeknight meal. Sarsarap Mushroom Sauce brings deep savoury richness to noodles, vegetables, meats, and marinades. Going Bananas Ketchup takes a familiar condiment somewhere completely different, while Banana on Fire builds heat on layers of fruit, fermentation, and flavour.

Big flavour. Less effort. Endless possibilities.

The Story Behind UmamiBee

UmamiBee was founded by Analiza Laurel-Badilles, known online as MotherBee, a food scientist with more than 35 years of experience in food product development, food manufacturing, and food safety.

Growing up in a Filipino family of cooks and food vendors, food was never simply something to eat. It was how people gathered, celebrated, cared for one another, and passed knowledge from one generation to the next.

That early understanding of food eventually met science.

Through decades of working in the food industry, Analiza learned how ingredients interact, how processing changes flavour, how fermentation develops complexity, and how seemingly simple foods can be engineered with purpose.

Then came the question that eventually shaped UmamiBee:

How can we build the flavour that normally takes time and make it easier for everyday cooks to use?

That became the idea behind UmamiBee.

Instead of asking you to spend your evening building flavour layer by layer, we build those layers into the product.

You add the spoon.

You decide where it goes.

Why UmamiBee?

Umami is the fifth basic taste and the deeply savoury sensation that makes food taste fuller, rounder, and more satisfying.

For us, though, umami means more than one taste.

It represents our obsession with understanding how flavour works. Fermentation. Roasting. Browning. Aromatics. Acidity. Sweetness. Salt. Texture. Aroma. And, most importantly, how those elements work together.

We use that understanding to build products with complexity already inside them.

Bee comes from MotherBee, Analiza’s food and cooking community (called NewBee Baking and Cooking where she is fondly called "MotherBee"), where she has spent years sharing recipes, food science, baking knowledge, and practical cooking techniques with home cooks around the world.

It represents curiosity, community, knowledge, and the belief that good food should be accessible to everyone.

Together, UmamiBee represents what we make:

Flavour engineered with purpose, inspired by tradition, and designed for real life.

Food Science Meets Everyday Cooking.

UmamiBee is not about making cooking unnecessary. It is about making good cooking easier.

Our products are designed to work across cuisines and skill levels. Use a spoon to rescue a quick weekday dinner, build a marinade, season vegetables, enrich a sauce, create a dipping sauce, or use it as the starting point for something completely your own.

  • Experienced cooks can build on them.

  • Beginners can cook with more confidence.

  • Busy households can get dinner on the table faster.

  • And food lovers can experiment without starting every flavour base from zero.

That versatility is intentional.

Made in New Zealand, Built With Purpose

UmamiBee products are developed using food science, culinary tradition, carefully selected ingredients, and processes chosen for what they contribute to flavour.

We make our products in small batches in New Zealand under a registered food control programme, with food safety and product quality considered from formulation through to the finished jar or bottle.

We are also proud that UmamiBee products have already been recognised through major New Zealand food awards, including the New Zealand Food Awards and NZ Artisan Awards.

For a young New Zealand food company, that recognition tells us something important:

You can make food more convenient without making flavour ordinary.

Our Promise

  • We believe convenience should not mean boring food.

  • A shortcut should save you time, not take away flavour.

  • So we ferment. We roast. We layer. We test. We refine.

Then we put all that work into a jar or bottle so that when life gets busy, you can reach for one spoon and keep cooking.

Big flavour. Less effort.

That is UmamiBee.
